Canadian Feed Peas - A Quality Feed Ingredient
Canadian feed peas are an excellent source of nutrients for all
species of animals. Peas are rich in protein, lysine and starch
(23%, 1.8% and 44.9% dry matter, respectively), and are therefore
able to provide both the amino acids and energy required by high-producing
animals.
Canada produces a reliable supply of top-quality
field peas, which enter both the human food and animal feed markets.
Canada’s annual production of field peas currently exceeds
3 million metric tonnes. Approximately 50% of Canadian pea production
enters the domestic and export feed markets annually. Over half
of these peas would meet the quality standards for human consumption,
making feed peas a top quality ingredient, indeed.
The animal feeding section of the Saskatchewan
Pulse Growers website provides information on the nutrient content
of field peas, and summarizes recent research using peas in swine,
poultry, dairy, beef, aquaculture and dog food rations. An extensive
review of world literature relating to the use of feed peas is
also contained, complete with a searchable database of the 2000+
abstracts referenced. Links to federal statutes regulating the
trade and utilization of feed peas and components are provided,
as well as links to pea-related articles and publications. Feed Pea Pricing
Feed pea pricing is determined within the open market. Feed peas
and other pulses are not traded using futures contracts in any
North American commodity exchange - only spot prices are available.
The SPG website contains a list of registered buyers, and those
listed as sellers may be contacted to determine prices on brokered
feed peas. Click
here to go to the Selling & Buying section.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada also maintains
a website that lists reported selling prices for various commodities,
including feed peas.
